Ruth Roman was born on June 22, 1939 on June 22, 1939 in Lynn Massachusetts. She is the youngest child of Lithuanian Jewish parents Mary Pauline Gold & Abraham Roman. She was only a young teenager when her father who was employed as the carnival barker, passed away. Her mother had to take on jobs like waitressing, cleaning and washing. Ruth attended the school in Boston's poorest tenement area. She left school after two years, to go into acting. This was not an easy path to take. Although she got a job as a hat check girl in New York posing as a still for a mystery magazine but no theater jobs came her way. After working as a hat-check girl at a nightclub she quit her job and moved back to Boston. In Boston, she worked to make enough money as an usherette in the morning, while in the evening, she performed with the New England Repertory Company, the first job she had that was steady. She earned a bachelor's degree in drama from Bishop-Lee Theatre School.
